Have you eaten eggs laid by your CEO’s chickens? Or enjoyed your front-end developer’s favorite childhood meal? ClimaCamp is when the all-remote Climative team gathers in very Maritimer fashion: one big house on the water with a kitchen big enough for a party. While this backdrop is very “Maritimes”, we bond over the most universal language of all: good food.
It’s always a bit startling to see your coworkers outside of a video call. Maybe someone is taller than you expected. Maybe they’re secretly incredible at ping-pong or guitar. Or they have great taste in shoes (or pants, for that matter). But everyone’s energy is the same when you meet in person: how they speak, what makes them tick, how they smile, and how they listen.
One of ClimaCamp’s greatest traditions started as a logistical necessity: every meal is planned and executed by a member of the team. This cherished practice brings a rich variety of food and teaches us something about our coworkers’ culture, childhood, and personality.
With our lunches packed, the team split up into three groups to take on adventures in the St. Andrews area:
It was a beautiful sunny day on the Bay of Fundy, and everyone came back with stories, a touch of late-summer sun on their faces, and a little bit ready for a nap. Oh, and a bucket full of fresh squid!
With the sun set and the Zoom AI transcriber nowhere to be seen, we settled into an evening of chatting around the fire. What is discussed when a small climate-tech company gets going? Airplanes, AI development, the meteoric rise in the cost of RAM, music we love, first jobs; the normal things that don’t always make the cut in 30-minute video calls.
This time at ClimaCamp is precious to our team. As exciting business opportunities come flying at us, expectations are high, and we lean on each other to push ourselves to do our best work in record time. It helps to work alongside people who legitimately enjoy their jobs and get a little boost when they wrap up a project that pushes them. That sort of intense work environment brings us closer together, and these social moments further strengthen our team bond.
